ERNiCrFe-5
Base Alloy: Nickel (Ni) based, conforming to AWS A5.14 specification.
Primary Alloying Elements:
Chromium (Cr): ~15-20% - Provides oxidation and corrosion resistance, contributes to strength.
Iron (Fe): ~8-11% - Helps control thermal expansion, aids in weldability, contributes to strength.
Niobium (Nb) / Columbium (Cb): ~2.5-3.5% - Crucial for ductility dip cracking (DDC) resistance. Forms beneficial carbides that pin grain boundaries and prevent the low-ductility grain boundary sliding characteristic of DDC.
Key Properties:
Excellent Cracking Resistance (DDC): This is one of the primary reasons for choosing ERNiCrFe-5. The combination of high nickel content (providing inherent toughness) and the addition of niobium specifically combats the susceptibility to ductility dip cracking, a major concern when welding thick sections of nickel-chromium alloys or restrained joints.
High Tensile Strength: The weld metal deposited by ERNiCrFe-5 typically achieves tensile strengths significantly exceeding 80 ksi (550 MPa), often reaching 85-95 ksi (585-655 MPa) or higher. This readily meets or exceeds the tensile strength of common base metals it's used to weld (like UNS N06600, N06601, N06025, many stainless steels, and carbon steels).
Excellent Weldability: It produces a smooth, stable arc with common processes like GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and SAW. It has good wetting characteristics, forms a desirable weld bead profile, and resists common weld defects like solidification cracking (due to controlled impurity levels like low S & P) and porosity when used correctly. Its composition also provides good tolerance to minor surface contamination compared to pure nickel wires.
Typical Applications:
Welding Nickel-Chromium (Ni-Cr) and Nickel-Chromium-Iron (Ni-Cr-Fe) Alloys: Most commonly used for welding UNS N06600 (Inconel 600), N06601 (Inconel 601), N06025 (Inconel 602CA), and similar alloys.
Dissimilar Metal Joining:
Joining nickel alloys to various stainless steels (like 304, 316, 321, 347).
Joining nickel alloys to carbon and low-alloy steels.
Joining stainless steels (especially austenitic) to carbon and low-alloy steels.
Overlaying/Cladding: Applying a corrosion/oxidation-resistant nickel alloy layer onto carbon or low-alloy steel components.
High-Temperature Service: Components exposed to high temperatures and requiring oxidation resistance, such as furnace parts, heat treatment equipment, and chemical processing equipment.
Critical Applications: Used in nuclear, aerospace, power generation, and chemical processing industries where high integrity, strength, and cracking resistance are paramount.
Common Base Metals Welded with ERNiCrFe-5:
Nickel Alloys: UNS N06600 (Inconel 600), N06601 (Inconel 601), N06025 (Inconel 602CA), N06045 (Incoloy 45HS), N06230 (Haynes 230), N08800 (Incoloy 800), N08810 (Incoloy 800H), N08811 (Incoloy 800HT).
Stainless Steels: Austenitic grades like 304, 304H, 304L, 316, 316H, 316L, 321, 321H, 347, 347H.
Carbon Steels & Low-Alloy Steels: Especially for dissimilar joints or cladding.
In Summary:
ERNiCrFe-5 is the industry-standard, nickel-chromium-iron-niobium solid welding wire specifically engineered to deliver:
Superb resistance to Ductility Dip Cracking (DDC).
Weld metal tensile strength exceeding common nickel alloy and stainless steel base metals.
Excellent overall weldability across common processes.
It is the go-to choice for high-integrity welding of Ni-Cr/Fe alloys, dissimilar combinations involving these alloys and steels, and applications demanding high strength and resistance to high-temperature cracking.
